Galvanized sheets, also known as galvanized plates, are usually mild steel sheets that has a protective zinc coating to prevent rusting and increase the surface hardness. Galvanized sheets have better corrosion resistance than untreated steel and also greater durability against the elements. Galvanized sheet has excellent formability and great machinability properties. Galvanized sheet is ideal for covering large areas with good protective qualities and is used in general fabrication, automotive and construction industries.
There are two predominant types of galvanized steel sheet, hot-dip galvanising and electrogalvanising. Hot-dip galvanized steel sheet takes a steel surface and dips it in molten pure zinc. Application of a zinc coating by dipping steel in a molten pool of zinc. Alloy layers such as zinc oxide and zinc carbonate, are formed on the primary metal through reaction with the surrounding atmosphere to form a protect coating. Zinc plating or electro-galvanizing applies a thin coating of zinc on a steel surface using an electric current. Electro-galvanizing produces a thinner less resilient surface and mostly recommended for interior use.
