Carbon steel square bar has a series of grades. It varies from low carbon to mild steel of 1018, leading free cutting steel 12L14 to higher alloy steel 4130 and 4140. The 1018 is suited for a variety of fabrication processes including welding and machining. The 1215 and 12L14 are useful for machined parts requiring close finish tolerances, while 1045 is found in axles, bolts, forged connecting rods, crankshafts, torsion bars and light gears, among other applications.
