API Pipeline

API is referred American Petroleum Institute. API pipeline is specially steel pipe used for the transmission of oil, gas and petroleum distillates, which are more suitable for the corrosive and high-pressure environments. API line pipe has seamless and welded types, which differs in outside diameter, wall thickness, pressure tolerance and cost etc.

Introduce

API has several standards in the oil and gas industry. The most widely used API Standards are API 5L (for line pipe), API 650 (for welded tanks), API 570 (for piping inspection), API 510 (for pressure vessel inspection), API 653 (for tank inspection), and API RP 2A (for offshore structures design). Thus API pipeline is also called API 5L pipeline. API 5L line pipe also has two standards: PSL1 and PSL2. PSL-1 is a loose standard quality for line pipe, whereas PSL-2 contains additional testing requirement, stricter chemical physicals, along with different ceiling limits of mechanical properties, and require Charpy impact testing conditions.

Application

Uses of welded steel pipe include energy, construction, automotive, marine and offshore industries, telecommunication, agriculture and general fabrication.

Some common industries and applications include:

  • Construction

Welded steel pipe has a large number of applications in the field of construction, mainly used in building structures and reinforced concrete formwork.

  • Shipbuiding

Welded steel pipe also has important applications in shipbuilding. It is mainly used to build the main structure of the ship, such as the hull, deck, bow, stern and other parts.

  • Oil and Gas

Widely used in oil and gas extraction, transportation and processing. It is used in the manufacture of oil well pipes, pipelines, drilling pipes and other petroleum equipment.

  • Mechanical

Welded steel pipe is widely used to manufacture a variety of mechanical equipment and parts, such as automobiles, ships, airplanes and construction machinery etc.
