Medium carbon steel plate has a carbon content of approximately 0.3%–0.60%. It is stronger and harder than low carbon steel plate but has less ductility, toughness, and malleability. Medium carbon steel plate is widely used in making steel gears, axles, wire, garden tools, springs etc. The common medium carbon steel grades are US ASTM SAE AISI 1030, 1034, 1035, 1038, 1040, 1042, 1043, 1045, 1050, 1055 etc.
With the carbon content of 0.30% to 0.60%, medium carbon steel plate is stronger and more durable than low carbon steel, which causes it makes it much harder to shape and weld. But medium carbons steel plates still offer at least some ductility.
